An October Aesthetic: A Wedding Designers Inspiration

Wright & Co

As a wedding planner and designer, there’s nothing more exciting than diving into the deep, mysterious vibes of October. The spooky season offers a unique opportunity to play with shadows, textures, and atmospheric elements that give an event an otherworldly, enchanting feel. Today, I want to walk you through the inspiration behind our latest October event aesthetic—an eerie, modern twist on the classic Halloween vibe through a modern lens.

The Foundation: Embracing the Unconventional

This aesthetic is about embracing the dark and dramatic, while balancing it with touches of elegance and refinement. We drew inspiration from moody, monochromatic color palettes—deep charcoals, rich burgundies, off-whites, and hints of metallics. These tones create a captivating contrast that feels both timeless and sophisticated, allowing us to explore a spooky theme without leaning into clichés.

Architectural Elements: A Play of Light and Shadow

A key element in designing this October aesthetic is architectural detail. We envisioned spaces with checkerboard marble floors reminiscent of historic European ballrooms, which serve as a base for layering textures and visual intrigue. These floors not only ground the aesthetic but also play with the concept of light and shadow, inviting a sense of surrealism and wonder.

Organic Florals: A Nod to the Wild and Untamed

Florals are a powerful tool in telling a story, and for this aesthetic, we focused on creating asymmetrical, oversized arrangements featuring twisted branches, deep red foliage, and muted white florals. The intention was to evoke the haunting beauty of an overgrown forest—a nod to nature’s mysterious, untamed side. The combination of these organic elements against structured backdrops adds a layer of drama that feels both wild and carefully curated.

Candlelight: The Subtle Art of Eerie Ambiance

Candlelight is an essential component in crafting this October aesthetic. We chose sculptural candles with an organic, melted appearance to create a sense of timelessness and intrigue. When arranged strategically, they cast soft, eerie shadows, transforming the space into a sanctuary of warm glows and mysterious corners. We also imagined an outdoor bonfire as a focal point—a dramatic element that suggests ancient gatherings and ritualistic energy.

Culinary Experience: A Visual Feast

In this aesthetic, the dining experience is not just about taste but also visual storytelling. We envisioned dishes that look like they’ve come straight from an alchemist’s kitchen—dark chocolates, black sesame, and autumnal spices presented as avant-garde works of art. This approach allows guests to engage with their senses fully, as each dish becomes a small, mysterious discovery.

Fashion: A Modern Gothic Approach

To complement this aesthetic, attire takes on a dark, modern edge. We imagined sheer, structured gowns that play with light and layers, offering an ethereal, almost ghostly effect. For guests, monochromatic outfits in rich textures like velvet, silk, and leather add depth and sophistication, blending classic gothic influences with contemporary style.

The Essence: A Slow Immersion into Mystery

Ultimately, the essence of this October aesthetic is about creating an immersive experience—a slow descent into an enchanting world where shadows and light dance, where the modern and the mystical meet. As a wedding designer, my goal was to craft an aesthetic that lingers in the imagination, offering an elevated take on the spooky season.

Whether you’re planning a wedding or simply inspired by the mysterious allure of October, this aesthetic invites you to embrace the unknown, celebrate beauty in darkness, and create a space where the magical feels real.
